This fragment from etc/NEWS:

    The character code space is now 0x0..0x3FFFFF with no gap.
    Characters of code 0x0..0x10FFFF are Unicode characters of the same code points.
    Characters of code 0x3FFF80..0x3FFFFF are raw 8-bit bytes.

seems to contradict itself: it says there's ``no gap'', but the codes
between 0x110000 and 0x3FFF7F do constitute a gap, don't they?

Another fragment from etc/NEWS that seems not entirely accurate:

    In buffers and strings, characters are represented by UTF-8 byte
    sequences in a multibyte buffer/string.

But UTF-8 defines 1- to 4-byte sequences to represent each Unicode
codepoint, whereas this comment from character.h:

I tried to rewrite nonascii.texi to clear the things.  I
finished upto the "Character Code" section as attached.
What do you think about it?

  Emacs has two @dfn{text representations}---two ways to represent
text in a string or buffer.  These are called @dfn{unibyte} and
@dfn{multibyte}.  Each string, and each buffer, uses one of these two
representations to store a sequence Emacs character.  Emacs classifies
characters into these three; @acronym{ASCII} characters,
non-@acronym{ASCII} charcters, and 8-bit charcters.  8-bit characters
correponds to raw bytes of 128 through 255.  For detail, @xref{Character Codes}.

@cindex unibyte text
@cindex unibyte character
  In unibyte representation, each character occupies one byte and
therefore the possible character codes range from 0 to 255.  Codes 0
through 127 are @acronym{ASCII} characters; the codes from 128 through 255
are 8-bit charactes.  Non-@acronym{ASCII} characters can not be stored
in unibyte text.  We call a character in unibyte text as unibyte
character.

  In multibyte representation, a character may occupy more than one
byte, and as a result, the full range of Emacs character codes
(#x0..#x3FFFFF) can be stored.  @acronym{ASCII} characters occupy one
byte, non-@acronym{ASCII} characters occupy two to five bytes (the
first byte is in the range #xC2 through #xF8, and the remaining bytes
are in the range #x80 through #xBF), and 8-bit characters occupy two
bytes (the first byte is #xC0 or $xC2, and the second byte is in the
range #x80 through #xBF).  Actually this representation is the same as
UTF-8 with extentions for non-Unicode characters and 8-bit characters.
It is assured that a byte sequence that doesn't fit above never appears
in this representation.

  In a buffer, the buffer-local value of the variable
@code{enable-multibyte-characters} specifies the representation used.
The representation for a string is determined and recorded in the string
when the string is constructed.

@defvar enable-multibyte-characters
This variable specifies the current buffer's text representation.
If it is non-@code{nil}, the buffer contains multibyte text; otherwise,
it contains unibyte text.

You cannot set this variable directly; instead, use the function
@code{set-buffer-multibyte} to change a buffer's representation.

@defvar default-enable-multibyte-characters
This variable's value is entirely equivalent to @code{(default-value
'enable-multibyte-characters)}, and setting this variable changes that
default value.  Setting the local binding of
@code{enable-multibyte-characters} in a specific buffer is not allowed,
but changing the default value is supported, and it is a reasonable
thing to do, because it has no effect on existing buffers.

The @samp{--unibyte} command line option does its job by setting the
default value to @code{nil} early in startup.

@defun position-bytes position
Return the byte-position corresponding to buffer position
@var{position} in the current buffer.  This is 1 at the start of the
buffer, and counts upward in bytes.  If @var{position} is out of
range, the value is @code{nil}.

@defun byte-to-position byte-position
Return the buffer position corresponding to byte-position
@var{byte-position} in the current buffer.  If @var{byte-position} is
out of range, the value is @code{nil}.  If @var{byte-position} is not
at a character boundary (in case of multibyte buffer), the value is
the buffer position of the character that occupies @var{byte-position}.

Return @code{t} if @var{string} is a multibyte string.

This function returns the number of bytes in @var{string}.
If @var{string} is a multibyte string, this can be greater than
@code{(length @var{string})}.

@section Converting Text Representations

  Emacs can convert unibyte text to multibyte; it can also convert
multibyte text to unibyte provided that the multibyte text contains
only @acronym{ASCII} and 8-bit characters.  In
general these conversions happen when inserting text into a buffer, or
when putting text from several strings together in one string.  You can
also explicitly convert a string's contents to either representation.

  Emacs chooses the representation for a string based on the text that
it is constructed from.  The general rule is to convert unibyte text to
multibyte text when combining it with other multibyte text, because the
multibyte representation is more general and can hold whatever
characters the unibyte text has.

  When inserting text into a buffer, Emacs converts the text to the
buffer's representation, as specified by
@code{enable-multibyte-characters} in that buffer.  In particular, when
you insert multibyte text into a unibyte buffer, Emacs converts the text
to unibyte, even though this conversion cannot in general preserve all
the characters that might be in the multibyte text.  The other natural
alternative, to convert the buffer contents to multibyte, is not
acceptable because the buffer's representation is a choice made by the
user that cannot be overridden automatically.

  Converting unibyte text to multibyte text leaves @acronym{ASCII} characters
unchanged, and converts 8-bit characters (codes 128 through 159) to
the corresponding representation for multibyte text.

  Converting multibyte text to unibyte is simpler: it discards all but
the low 8 bits of each character code.  It effectively converts all
@acronym{ASCII} and 8-bit characters to the corresponding unibyte
representation, but loose information for non-@acronym{ASCII}
characters.  Converting unibyte text to multibyte and back to unibyte
reproduces the original unibyte text.

The next three functions either return the argument @var{string}, or a
newly created string with no text properties.

@defun string-to-multibyte string
This function returns a multibyte string containing the same sequence
of characters as @var{string}.  If @var{string} is a multibyte string,
it is returned unchanged.
@end defun

@defun string-to-unibyte string
This function returns a unibyte string containing the same sequence of
characters as @var{string}.  It signals an error if @var{string}
contains a non-@acronym{ASCII} character.  If @var{string} is a
unibyte string, it is returned unchanged.
@end defun

@defun multibyte-char-to-unibyte char
This convert the multibyte character @var{char} to a unibyte
character.  If @var{char} is a non-@acronym{ASCII} character, the
value is -1.

@defun unibyte-char-to-multibyte char
This convert the unibyte character @var{char} to a multibyte
character.

  Sometimes it is useful to examine an existing buffer or string as
multibyte when it was unibyte, or vice versa.

@defun set-buffer-multibyte multibyte
Set the representation type of the current buffer.  If @var{multibyte}
is non-@code{nil}, the buffer becomes multibyte.  If @var{multibyte}
is @code{nil}, the buffer becomes unibyte.

This function leaves the buffer contents unchanged when viewed as a
sequence of bytes.  As a consequence, it can change the contents
viewed as characters; a sequence of three bytes which is treated as
one character in multibyte representation will count as three
characters in unibyte representation.  8-bit characters are an
exception.  They are represented by one byte in a unibyte buffer, but
when the buffer is set to multibyte, they are converted to two-byte
sequences, and vice versa.

This function sets @code{enable-multibyte-characters} to record which
representation is in use.  It also adjusts various data in the buffer
(including overlays, text properties and markers) so that they cover the
same text as they did before.

You cannot use @code{set-buffer-multibyte} on an indirect buffer,
because indirect buffers always inherit the representation of the
base buffer.

Thanks, this definitely helps.  Unfortunately, you worked from a
non-current version of nonascii.texi; I already modified the first
section heavily.  Please take a look when you can: I intend to
downplay the unibyte stuff heavily, while the previous version gave
unibyte and multibyte almost equal coverage.

So I guess you agree that NEWS is not entirely correct saying that we
use UTF-8 internally: UTF-8 uses only 1 to 4 bytes, not 1 to 5.
Should I fix NEWS in this regard, saying that the internal
representation is based on UTF-8, but extends it to handle additional
characters?

Oops, I couldn't do "cvs update" until yesterday.  I've just
done it.

It seems that your last change is upto "@defun unibyte
string" (before @section Converting Text Representations).
May I leave the work of reflecting what I wrote to the
section before "Character Code" to you?  I'll continue to
fix the document after that section.

As far as I remember, "UTF-8" was, at first, a general
mechanism to serialize a 31-bit unsigned value into byte
stream (thus upto 6-byte sequence).  But, at some point, it
seems that it is restricted to the Unicode coverage (thus
upto 4-byte sequence).  I think it's a regression.  Anyway,
yes, it is better to mention that Emacs uses extended utf-8
(or original utf-8).

  A character set is a set of characters, and it assigns a unique code
point to each character belonging to the set.  Emacs decodes a
specific code point of a specific character set to an Emacs character.
For example, @code{iso-8859-1} is one character set, and it contains
the character A-grave by code-point #xC0.  Emacs decodes that
character into Emacs' character of code #xC0.  @code{iso-8859-2} is
another character set, and it contains the character R-acute by
code-point #xC0.  Emacs decodes that character into Emacs' character
of code #x154.  @code{unicode} is also a character set.  It contains
both A-grave and R-acute by code-point #xC0 and #x154 respectively.
Emacs decodes them to Emacs' character #xC0 and #x154.  Actually, all
characters in @code{unicode} are decoded to characters of the same
code values (in the range #x0 through #x10FFFF).

  Some character set contains characters not included in
@code{unicode} (for example, characters for private use).  Emacs
decodes such characters into a character code space uniquely kept for
each character set.  That code space is in the range #x110000 through
#x3FFF7F.

  Emacs has two special character set named @code{emacs} and
@code{eight-bit}.  The former contains all @acronym{ASCII} and
non-@acronym{ASCII} characters, and the latter contains all remaining
characters; i.e. all 8-bit characters.

  How to define a characte set is an arcane matter, and is not
documented here.

Returns @code{t} if @var{object} is a symbol that names a character set,
@code{nil} otherwise.

The value is a list of all defined character set names.

@defun charset-list
This function returns the value of @code{charset-list}.  It is only
provided for backward compatibility.

@defun charset-priority-list &optional highestp
This functions returns a list of character sets sorted by their
priorities.  If @var{highestp} is non-@code{nil}, returns a character
set of highest priority instread of returning a list.

@defun char-charset character
This function returns the name of the character set of highest
priority that @var{character} belongs to.
@acronym{ASCII} characters are an exception.  For them, this function
always returns @code{ascii}.

@defun charset-plist charset
This function returns the charset property list of the character set
@var{charset}.  Although @var{charset} is a symbol, this is not the same
as the property list of that symbol.  Charset properties are used for
special purposes within Emacs.

  A @dfn{translation table} is a char-table that specifies a mapping
of characters (or sequences of characters) into characters (or
sequences of characters).  These tables are used in encoding and
decoding, and for other purposes.  Some coding systems specify their
own particular translation tables; there are also default translation
tables which apply to all coding systems.

  A translation table has two extra slots; the first is @code{nil} or
a translation table that performs the reverse translation, and the
second is a maximum number of characters to look up for translation.

  In decoding, the translation table's translations are applied to the
characters that result from ordinary decoding.  If a coding system has
property @code{:deocde-translation-table}, that specifies the
translation table or the list of cascading translation table to use.
(This is a property of the coding system, as returned by
@code{coding-system-get}, not a property of the symbol that is the
coding system's name.  @xref{Coding System Basics,, Basic Concepts of
Coding Systems}.)  In the latter case, characters are translated by
each translation tables in the specified order.  And, at last, if
@code{standard-translation-table-for-decode} is non-@code{nil},
the resulting characters are translated by that table.

  In encoding, the translation table's translations are applied to the
characters in the buffer, and the result of translation is actually
encoded.  If a coding system has property
@code{:encode-translation-table}, that specifies the translation table
or the list of cascading translation tables to use.  In addition, if
the variable @code{standard-translation-table-for-encode} is
non-@code{nil}, it is used at last.

@cindex character code conversion
  @dfn{Character code conversion} involves conversion between the encoding
used inside Emacs and some other encoding.  Emacs supports many
different encodings, in that it can convert to and from them.  For
example, it can convert text to or from encodings such as Latin 1, Latin
2, Latin 3, Latin 4, Latin 5, and several variants of ISO 2022.  In some
cases, Emacs supports several alternative encodings for the same
characters; for example, there are three coding systems for the Cyrillic
(Russian) alphabet: ISO, Alternativnyj, and KOI8.

  Most coding systems specify a particular character code for
conversion, but some of them leave the choice unspecified---to be chosen
heuristically for each file, based on the data.

  In general, a coding system doesn't guarantee roundtrip identity:
decoding a byte sequence using coding system, then encoding the
resulting text in the same coding system, can produce a different byte
sequence.  For example, the following coding systems guarantee that the
byte sequence will be the same as what you originally decoded:

  Encoding buffer text and then decoding the result can also fail to

  @dfn{End of line conversion} handles three different conventions used
on various systems for representing end of line in files.  The Unix
convention is to use the linefeed character (also called newline).  The
DOS convention is to use a carriage-return and a linefeed at the end of
a line.  The Mac convention is to use just carriage-return.

@cindex variant coding system
  @dfn{Base coding systems} such as @code{latin-1} leave the end-of-line
conversion unspecified, to be chosen based on the data.  @dfn{Variant
coding systems} such as @code{latin-1-unix}, @code{latin-1-dos} and
@code{latin-1-mac} specify the end-of-line conversion explicitly as
well.  Most base coding systems have three corresponding variants whose
names are formed by adding @samp{-unix}, @samp{-dos} and @samp{-mac}.

  The coding system @code{raw-text} is special in that it prevents
character code conversion, and causes the buffer visited with that
coding system to be a unibyte buffer.  It does not specify the
end-of-line conversion, allowing that to be determined as usual by the
data, and has the usual three variants which specify the end-of-line
conversion.  @code{no-conversion} is equivalent to @code{raw-text-unix}:
it specifies no conversion of either character codes or end-of-line.

  The coding system @code{emacs-internal} specifies that the data is
represented in the internal Emacs encoding.  This is like
@code{raw-text} in that no code conversion happens, but different in
that the result is multibyte data.

This function returns the specified property of the coding system
@var{coding-system}.  Most coding system properties exist for internal
purposes, but one that you might find useful is @code{:mime-charset}.
That property's value is the name used in MIME for the character coding
which this coding system can read and write.  Examples:

  The principal purpose of coding systems is for use in reading and
writing files.  The function @code{insert-file-contents} uses
a coding system for decoding the file data, and @code{write-region}
uses one to encode the buffer contents.

  You can specify the coding system to use either explicitly
(@pxref{Specifying Coding Systems}), or implicitly using a default
mechanism (@pxref{Default Coding Systems}).  But these methods may not
completely specify what to do.  For example, they may choose a coding
system such as @code{undefined} which leaves the character code
conversion to be determined from the data.  In these cases, the I/O
operation finishes the job of choosing a coding system.  Very often
you will want to find out afterwards which coding system was chosen.

@defvar buffer-file-coding-system
This buffer-local variable records the coding system used for saving the
buffer and for writing part of the buffer with @code{write-region}.  If
the text to be written cannot be safely encoded using the coding system
specified by this variable, these operations select an alternative
encoding by calling the function @code{select-safe-coding-system}
(@pxref{User-Chosen Coding Systems}).  If selecting a different encoding
requires to ask the user to specify a coding system,
@code{buffer-file-coding-system} is updated to the newly selected coding
system.

@code{buffer-file-coding-system} does @emph{not} affect sending text
to a subprocess.

@defvar save-buffer-coding-system
This variable specifies the coding system for saving the buffer (by
overriding @code{buffer-file-coding-system}).  Note that it is not used
for @code{write-region}.

When a command to save the buffer starts out to use
@code{buffer-file-coding-system} (or @code{save-buffer-coding-system}),
and that coding system cannot handle
the actual text in the buffer, the command asks the user to choose
another coding system (by calling @code{select-safe-coding-system}).
After that happens, the command also updates
@code{buffer-file-coding-system} to represent the coding system that
the user specified.

@defvar last-coding-system-used
I/O operations for files and subprocesses set this variable to the
coding system name that was used.  The explicit encoding and decoding

value shortly after the function call that stores the value you are
interested in.

The variable @code{file-name-coding-system} specifies the coding
system to use for encoding file names.  Emacs encodes file names using

@code{file-name-coding-system} is @code{nil}, Emacs uses a default
coding system determined by the selected language environment.  In the
default language environment, any non-@acronym{ASCII} characters in
file names are not encoded specially; they appear in the file system
using the internal Emacs representation.

the language environment) in the middle of an Emacs session, problems
can result if you have already visited files whose names were encoded

This function selects a coding system for encoding specified text,
asking the user to choose if necessary.  Normally the specified text
is the text in the current buffer between @var{from} and @var{to}.  If
@var{from} is a string, the string specifies the text to encode, and
@var{to} is ignored.

If @var{default-coding-system} is non-@code{nil}, that is the first
coding system to try; if that can handle the text,
@code{select-safe-coding-system} returns that coding system.  It can
also be a list of coding systems; then the function tries each of them
one by one.  After trying all of them, it next tries the current
buffer's value of @code{buffer-file-coding-system} (if it is not
@code{undecided}), then the value of
@code{default-buffer-file-coding-system} and finally the user's most
preferred coding system, which the user can set using the command
@code{prefer-coding-system} (@pxref{Recognize Coding,, Recognizing
Coding Systems, emacs, The GNU Emacs Manual}).

If one of those coding systems can safely encode all the specified
text, @code{select-safe-coding-system} chooses it and returns it.
Otherwise, it asks the user to choose from a list of coding systems
which can encode all the text, and returns the user's choice.

@var{default-coding-system} can also be a list whose first element is
t and whose other elements are coding systems.  Then, if no coding
system in the list can handle the text, @code{select-safe-coding-system}
queries the user immediately, without trying any of the three
alternatives described above.

The optional argument @var{accept-default-p}, if non-@code{nil},
should be a function to determine whether a coding system selected
without user interaction is acceptable. @code{select-safe-coding-system}
calls this function with one argument, the base coding system of the
selected coding system.  If @var{accept-default-p} returns @code{nil},
@code{select-safe-coding-system} rejects the silently selected coding
system, and asks the user to select a coding system from a list of
possible candidates.

@vindex select-safe-coding-system-accept-default-p
If the variable @code{select-safe-coding-system-accept-default-p} is
non-@code{nil}, its value overrides the value of
@var{accept-default-p}.

As a final step, before returning the chosen coding system,
@code{select-safe-coding-system} checks whether that coding system is
consistent with what would be selected if the contents of the region
were read from a file.  (If not, this could lead to data corruption in
a file subsequently re-visited and edited.)  Normally,
@code{select-safe-coding-system} uses @code{buffer-file-name} as the
file for this purpose, but if @var{file} is non-@code{nil}, it uses
that file instead (this can be relevant for @code{write-region} and
similar functions).  If it detects an apparent inconsistency,
@code{select-safe-coding-system} queries the user before selecting the
coding system.

particular coding system for a particular operation in a Lisp program,
don't change these variables; instead, override them using
@code{coding-system-for-read} and @code{coding-system-for-write}
(@pxref{Specifying Coding Systems}).

@defvar auto-coding-regexp-alist
This variable is an alist of text patterns and corresponding coding
systems. Each element has the form @code{(@var{regexp}
. @var{coding-system})}; a file whose first few kilobytes match
@var{regexp} is decoded with @var{coding-system} when its contents are
read into a buffer.  The settings in this alist take priority over
@code{coding:} tags in the files and the contents of
@code{file-coding-system-alist} (see below).  The default value is set
so that Emacs automatically recognizes mail files in Babyl format and
reads them with no code conversions.

@defvar file-coding-system-alist
This variable is an alist that specifies the coding systems to use for
reading and writing particular files.  Each element has the form
@code{(@var{pattern} . @var{coding})}, where @var{pattern} is a regular
expression that matches certain file names.  The element applies to file
names that match @var{pattern}.

The @sc{cdr} of the element, @var{coding}, should be either a coding
system, a cons cell containing two coding systems, or a function name (a
symbol with a function definition).  If @var{coding} is a coding system,
that coding system is used for both reading the file and writing it.  If
@var{coding} is a cons cell containing two coding systems, its @sc{car}
specifies the coding system for decoding, and its @sc{cdr} specifies the
coding system for encoding.

If @var{coding} is a function name, the function should take one
argument, a list of all arguments passed to
@code{find-operation-coding-system}.  It must return a coding system
or a cons cell containing two coding systems.  This value has the same
meaning as described above.

If @var{coding} (or what returned by the above function) is
@code{undecided}, the normal code-detection is performed.

This variable is an alist specifying which coding systems to use for a
subprocess, depending on which program is running in the subprocess.  It

coding systems used for I/O to the subprocess, but you can specify
other coding systems later using @code{set-process-coding-system}.

  @strong{Warning:} Coding systems such as @code{undecided}, which
determine the coding system from the data, do not work entirely reliably
with asynchronous subprocess output.  This is because Emacs handles
asynchronous subprocess output in batches, as it arrives.  If the coding
system leaves the character code conversion unspecified, or leaves the
end-of-line conversion unspecified, Emacs must try to detect the proper
conversion from one batch at a time, and this does not always work.

  Therefore, with an asynchronous subprocess, if at all possible, use a
coding system which determines both the character code conversion and
the end of line conversion---that is, one like @code{latin-1-unix},
rather than @code{undecided} or @code{latin-1}.

@defvar network-coding-system-alist
This variable is an alist that specifies the coding system to use for
network streams.  It works much like @code{file-coding-system-alist},
with the difference that the @var{pattern} in an element may be either a
port number or a regular expression.  If it is a regular expression, it
is matched against the network service name used to open the network
stream.

Each function in this list should be written to look at text in the
current buffer, but should not modify it in any way.  The buffer will
contain undecoded text of parts of the file.  Each function should
take one argument, @var{size}, which tells it how many characters to
look at, starting from point.  If the function succeeds in determining
a coding system for the file, it should return that coding system.
Otherwise, it should return @code{nil}.

If a file has a @samp{coding:} tag, that takes precedence, so these
functions won't be called.

@defun find-operation-coding-system operation &rest arguments
This function returns the coding system to use (by default) for
performing @var{operation} with @var{arguments}.  The value has this
form:

The first element, @var{decoding-system}, is the coding system to use
for decoding (in case @var{operation} does decoding), and
@var{encoding-system} is the coding system for encoding (in case

@code{start-process}, @code{call-process}, @code{call-process-region},
@code{insert-file-contents}, or @code{open-network-stream}.  These are
the names of the Emacs I/O primitives that can do character code and
eol conversion.

The remaining arguments should be the same arguments that might be given
to the corresponding I/O primitive.  Depending on the primitive, one
of those arguments is selected as the @dfn{target}.  For example, if
@var{operation} does file I/O, whichever argument specifies the file
name is the target.  For subprocess primitives, the process name is the
target.  For @code{open-network-stream}, the target is the service name
or port number.

Depending on @var{operation}, this function looks up the target in
@code{file-coding-system-alist}, @code{process-coding-system-alist},
or @code{network-coding-system-alist}.  If the target is found in the
alist, @code{find-operation-coding-system} returns its association in
the alist; otherwise it returns @code{nil}.

If @var{operation} is @code{insert-file-contents}, the argument
corresponding to the target may be a cons cell of the form
@code{(@var{filename} . @var{buffer})}).  In that case, @var{filename}
is a file name to look up in @code{file-coding-system-alist}, and
@var{buffer} is a buffer that contains the file's contents (not yet
decoded).  If @code{file-coding-system-alist} specifies a function to
call for this file, and that function needs to examine the file's
contents (as it usually does), it should examine the contents of
@var{buffer} instead of reading the file.

  You can specify the coding system for a specific operation by binding
the variables @code{coding-system-for-read} and/or
@code{coding-system-for-write}.

If this variable is non-@code{nil}, it specifies the coding system to
use for reading a file, or for input from a synchronous subprocess.

It also applies to any asynchronous subprocess or network stream, but in
a different way: the value of @code{coding-system-for-read} when you
start the subprocess or open the network stream specifies the input
decoding method for that subprocess or network stream.  It remains in
use for that subprocess or network stream unless and until overridden.

The right way to use this variable is to bind it with @code{let} for a
specific I/O operation.  Its global value is normally @code{nil}, and
you should not globally set it to any other value.  Here is an example
of the right way to use the variable:

When a single operation does both input and output, as do
@code{call-process-region} and @code{start-process}, both
@code{coding-system-for-read} and @code{coding-system-for-write}
affect it.

When this variable is non-@code{nil}, no end-of-line conversion is done,

  The result of encoding, and the input to decoding, are not ordinary

series of @acronym{ASCII} and 8-bit characters.  In a multibyte buffer
or string, 8-bit characters have character codes higher than 255, but
Emacs effectively get their byte values on those operation.

  The usual way to read a file into a buffer as a sequence of bytes, so
you can decode the contents explicitly, is with
@code{insert-file-contents-literally} (@pxref{Reading from Files});
alternatively, specify a non-@code{nil} @var{rawfile} argument when
visiting a file with @code{find-file-noselect}.  These methods result in
a unibyte buffer.

  The usual way to use the byte sequence that results from explicitly
encoding text is to copy it to a file or process---for example, to write
it with @code{write-region} (@pxref{Writing to Files}), and suppress
encoding by binding @code{coding-system-for-write} to
@code{no-conversion}.

  Here are the functions to perform explicit encoding or decoding.  The
encoding functions produce sequences of bytes; the decoding functions
are meant to operate on sequences of bytes.  All of these functions
discard text properties.

@deffn Command encode-coding-region start end coding-system &optional destination
This command encodes the text from @var{start} to @var{end} according
to coding system @var{coding-system}.  The encoded text replaces the
original text in the buffer.  The result of encoding is logically a
sequence of bytes, but the buffer remains multibyte if it was multibyte

This variable, automatically buffer-local in each buffer, records the
file type of the buffer's visited file.  When a buffer does not specify
a coding system with @code{buffer-file-coding-system}, this variable is
used to determine which coding system to use when writing the contents
of the buffer.  It should be @code{nil} for text, @code{t} for binary.
If it is @code{t}, the coding system is @code{no-conversion}.
Otherwise, @code{undecided-dos} is used.

Normally this variable is set by visiting a file; it is set to
@code{nil} if the file was visited without any actual conversion.

@defopt file-name-buffer-file-type-alist
This variable holds an alist for recognizing text and binary files.
Each element has the form (@var{regexp} . @var{type}), where
@var{regexp} is matched against the file name, and @var{type} may be
@code{nil} for text, @code{t} for binary, or a function to call to
compute which.  If it is a function, then it is called with a single
argument (the file name) and should return @code{t} or @code{nil}.

When running on MS-DOS or MS-Windows, Emacs checks this alist to decide

  @dfn{Input methods} provide convenient ways of entering non-@acronym{ASCII}
characters from the keyboard.  Unlike coding systems, which translate

programs, input methods provide human-friendly commands.  (@xref{Input
Methods,,, emacs, The GNU Emacs Manual}, for information on how users
use input methods to enter text.)  How to define input methods is not
yet documented in this manual, but here we describe how to use them.

  Each input method has a name, which is currently a string;
in the future, symbols may also be usable as input method names.

This variable holds the name of the input method now active in the
current buffer.  (It automatically becomes local in each buffer when set

Thanks.  But I'm still a bit in the dark, as for how to describe this
correctly and concisely.  Do we actually use the range of codes
between 0x110000 and 0x3FFF7F?  If so, for what characters?  If we do
not use them now, are there some plans for using them in the future?

I have a few questions:

      Emacs can convert unibyte text to multibyte; it can also convert
    multibyte text to unibyte provided that the multibyte text contains
    only @acronym{ASCII} and 8-bit characters.

What exactly is meant here by ``8-bit characters''?  Do you mean
eight-bit raw bytes, or do you mean Unicode characters whose
codepoints are below 256?

      Converting unibyte text to multibyte text leaves @acronym{ASCII} characters
    unchanged, and converts 8-bit characters (codes 128 through 159) to
    the corresponding representation for multibyte text.

Again, by ``8-bit characters'' you mean raw 8-bit bytes here, right?

    @defun string-to-multibyte string
    This function returns a multibyte string containing the same sequence
    of characters as @var{string}.  If @var{string} is a multibyte string,
    it is returned unchanged.

I'm not sure I understand the effect of this function.  Does it decode
its argument, converting each byte to the corresponding internal
representation of the encoded single-byte character?  I think this is
not what it does, but then what does it do?

When I write gdb script, I need to set many breakpoints. such as:

I decided not to document this.  I think the concept of charset
dimension is too obscure to explain, and not really needed for Lisp
programs, unless they need to define a new charset, or display a
charset, and those are already done by Emacs infrastructure.  Do you
see any problems with not documenting this function?

      A translation table has two extra slots.  The first is either
    @code{nil} or a translation table that performs the reverse
    translation; the second is the maximum number of characters to look up
    for translation.

Could you please elaborate on the second extra slot: when and for what
purpose would there be a need to look up characters for translation?

It should be eight-bit raw bytes.  In some cases it's difficult to tell
the difference, so Emacs may occasionally accept latin-1 chars as stand
ins for eight-bit raw bytes.

I think we should state somewhere that unibyte strings and buffers
contain bytes only.  And that multibyte strings and buffers contain
chars.  And that bytes are a subset of chars.

I think the "non-ASCII" part is incorrect.  It probably should say
"non-byte char" instead.  It's useful when you have a multibyte string
which you (think you) know only holds bytes.

In 99% (actually 99.99999% for the `as' case) of the cases you shouldn't
use string-{as/make/to}-{uni/multi}byte.  Instead you should use
{en/de}code-coding-string.

Yes, you are missing the fact that 160-255 are valid 8859 code
points.  The text to which I referred is talking about 8-bit raw bytes
in the range 128-159, where there are no 8859 code points.

Please take a look at the current version of nonascii.texi in CVS, I
already did state this.  Specific suggestions for improvement are
welcome, of course.

(The text I was quoting was the original one written by Handa-san, not
the one I put into the manual.)

So you are in effect saying that the effect of this function is only
well defined for a string that holds ASCII characters and raw 8-bit
bytes?

"Non-ASCII characters" here does not mean "anything but ASCII
characters", it means "any character except ASCII and raw 8-bit
bytes" (assuming I understand the text correctly).  I will make sure
this tricky distinction is clear in the manual.

This specific section is not about en/decoding text, it's about
converting between unibyte and multibyte.  Unless we want to remove
any mention of these capabilities (and leave Lisp programmers without
any documentation on how to handle binary data and/or byte streams of
undecoded text), I don't think we can remove the description of these
functions from the manual.

Hm, strictly speaking these _are_ valid code points of ISO-8859-x
(aka ISO_8859-x:1987), only not assigned to displayable characters.

But of course you are right, I was missing the context of the cited
paragraph.

You're missing the fact that codes 128-255 can be one of two different
things, depending on context:
- for "unibyte chars", it's an "eight-bit" char (a byte)
- for "multibyte chars", it's a latin-1 char (not a byte).

The former; more precisely, characters representing
eight-bit raw bytes.  They have different character codes in
multibyte text (#x3FFF80..#x3FFFFF) and unibyte text
(#x80..#xFF).

No, all 8-bit characters (#x80..#xFF) in the source unibyte
string is converted to the multibyte representation of those

No.  A coding-system is a mapping between a sequence of
characters and a sequence of bytes.  The byte sequence
contains a byte not mapped to a character. For instance,
iso-2022 uses escape sequence, UTF-16 uses surrogate pairs.

I think no.

I classified characters into ASCII chars, non-ASCII chars,
and 8-bit chars at the beginning of "@node Text
Representations".  And, unibyte text can contain ASCII and
8-bit chars, multibyte text can contain all chars.

I'm not sure that is good as far as the Lisp reader returns
a unibyte string from "abc".

Then how to understand this sentence you wrote:

  Emacs decodes a specific code point of a specific character set to
  an Emacs character.

Under what circumstances does this decoding happen?  The only type of
``decoding'' I knew about until now was by decode-coding-region and
friends, which use a coding-system to decode a byte sequence into
Emacs characters.

I'll explain it a little bit more.  To decode a character
sequence to a byte sequence, Emacs actually does two kinds
of decoding as below:

But that's not really "decoding", is it?  By "decoding" we usually
mean conversion _to_ the Emacs internal representation, whereas in
your example, we convert _from_ the internal representation to some
other.

To avoid confusion, I suggest to talk about "conversion" of Emacs
characters to code points of a charset.  Do you agree?

we decode bytes into characters thru these pairs of charsets and code
points?

Thanks.  What confuses me is that, roughly, there's a charset in Emacs
23 for every coding-system, and they both have almost identical names.
For example, the code point of a-umlaut in the iso-8859-1 charset is
exactly identical to the byte value produced by encoding that
character with iso-8859-1 coding-system.  So I wonder why we need
both in Emacs.  Why can't we, for example, decode bytes directly into
Emacs characters?

That's true for many charsets / coding systems, but for example you
have coding systems utf-8, utf16le-with-signature, utf-7, utf-16le,
utf-16be, utf-16be-with-signature, utf-16, utf-8-with-signature,
utf-8-auto, etc., all of which encode the Unicode charset.

(As you point out later, this is normally denoted 'encoding' in Mule
functions like `encode-coding-region'.  Encoding is actually the
harder case to explain because the sequence of bytes produced for a
given character is context-dependent, so let's look at the bytes -->
characters conversion.)

Let's begin at the beginning, with the number 1 represented by the
Japanese ideograph ichi in the iso-2022-jp coding system, in an HTML
header element alone on a line.  As octets viewed as ASCII[1] it looks
like this in a file

< H 1 > ESC $ B 0 l ESC ( B < / H 1 > ^J

where spaces are represented by SPC (ie, there are no significant
spaces on the line).

(0) We decide to decode using the ISO-2022-JP, which allows multiple
    charsets (at least ASCII, Japanese JIS X 0208 and JIS X 0212, and
    explicitly extended to other registered charsets as ISO-2022-INT).
(1) We initialize current charset to ascii as mandated by the RFC
    defining ISO-2022-JP.
(2) We collect the octet < and translate it to a pair (which is
    trivial -- apply the identity to the octet, and pair it with
    'ascii) giving `(ascii <)'
(3) We convert to a Mule character (which is an integer) with
    "(csetidx(ascii) << 7) + ?<".
(4) We repeat (2) and (3) for H, 1, and >.
(5) We see the control sequence ESC $ B, and switch our current
    charset to japanese-jisx0208.
(6) JIS is a dimension 2 charset, so we collect two octets 0 and l,
    and form the pair (japanese-jisx0208 (0 l)).
(7) We convert to a Mule character (which is an integer) with
    "(csetidx(japanese-jisx0208) << 14) + ?0 << 7 + ?l".
(8) We see the control sequence ESC ( B, and switch our current
    charset to ascii.
(9) We repeat (2) and (3) for <, /, H, 1, >, and ^J.
(10) We are now done with the line, and we are ready to read more
     ASCII *or an escape sequence*.

So the full process (1) -- (10) corresponds to the coding system
ISO-2022-JP, while the process (2) -- (3) corresponds to the charset
ascii, and the process (6) -- (7) to the charset japanese-jisx0208.

No, not even close.  It happens that people who use ISO 8859 coded
character sets generally only see such coding systems (ie, unibyte
uniscript), so you would get that impression, as the coding systems
for those encodings are trivial.

However, for Unicode (as Juanma points out) the charset is always
Unicode (I don't know how that is spelled in Emacs, and XEmacs
technically doesn't have such a charset currently), but various coding
systems such as UTF-8, UTF-16, and UTF-32, in big- and little-endian
are used to decode bytes to code points of Unicode.  For the East
Asian coding systems and legacy ISO 2022 multiscript texts (ISO 2022
can handle not only Japanese, but also mixtures of, say, the Russian
ISO-8859-5 and Hebrew ISO-8859-8 repertoires), it's even more
complicated.

Note that because of the need to handle ASCII in programming, all of
the Asian coding systems must be multiscript, handling at least ASCII
and the national character set(s).

Because each byte is overloaded.  In the process above with the escape
sequences, we decode to a Mule string "<H1>[ichi]</H1>\n", while
without the escape sequences we would get "<H1>0l</H1>\n", also known
as "mojibake" (with a little bit of poetic license, the Japanese for
"monster characters").

Oops, sorry, I myself confused decoding and encoding.  Yes
the above is encoding.  And I did the same mistake in my
followup mail.

As we have functions encode-char and decode-char, I think it
is better to keep using the words "encoding" and "decoding"
for both kind of conversions; i.e. character <->
(charset . code-point), and string/buffer <-> byte-sequence.

paraphrase it as below.

To convert between a character sequence and a byte sequence,
Emacs actually does two steps of conversions as below.

Ex.1  utf-8

(1) and (2) are straight forward because charset is
`unicode' and Emacs character code and the code-point in
`unicode' are the same.  (3) decodes each (unicode
CODE-POINT) to utf-8 byte sequence, (4) does the reverse
conversion.

 "a\x3042x" -(1)-> (unicode #x61) (unicode #x3042) (unicode #x78)
            -(3)-> "#x61 #xE3 #x81 #x82 #x78"

Ex.2 iso-8859-2

(1) encodes each charater to code points of the charset
iso-8859-2 by the information of that charset, and (2) does
the reverse conversion.  (3) and (4) are straight forward
because the code-point sequence and the byte sequence are
the same.

Ex.3 iso-2022-jp (japanese)

(1) at first decides which charset (among what supported by
iso-2022-jp) to use for each character, and then encode the
charater to the correspoding (charset code-point) pair.  (2)
does the decoding using information of charset only.  (3)
generates a byte sequence from each code-point (one byte for
a charset of dimension 1, two bytes for a charset of
dimension 2), and also inserts a proper designation byte
sequence at charset boundary.
 "a\x3042x" -(1)-> (ascii #x61) (japanese-jisx0208 #x2422) (aciii #x78)
            -(3)-> "#x61 ESC $ B #x24 #x22 ESC ( B #x78"

Ex.4 gb2312 (chinese)

 "a\x3042x" -(1)-> (ascii #x61) (chinese-gb2312 #x2422) (aciii #x78)
            -(3)-> "#x61 #xA4 #xA2 #x78"

But there are coding-systems that have multiple charsets.
For instance, big5 coding-system support both ASCII and BIG5
charsets, iso-2022-7bit supports many many charsets.

Getting a code point from byte sequence and getting a
character code from a code point are different generally
(the above example of iso-8859-1 is rather rare example).  I
hope you understand why by seeing the above examples.

However, does this two-step procedure make a difference for a Lisp
programmer?  It sounds like this is an internal implementation detail
that happens transparently, so Lisp programmers shouldn't care about
it.

My original confusion was about when character sets are exposed to
Lisp application programs.  I understand that one situation is when
Emacs displays a character with some font.  Are there other
situations?

Arguments to these functions contains a charset or a list of
charsets:
  define-coding-system, map-charset-chars

In addition, I think "charset" is a very common concept for
users, and M-x list-charset-chars RET is a convenient
command.
