I can't reproduce it. Don't you happen to have Emacs.Font X
resource (what loaded by xrdb)?
And, do you mean the version before unicode-merge by "an
older version of emacs-23"?
By the way, please show the result of M-x font-show-log RET
instead of showing the value font-log directly.
