Hmmm, strange.  In my environment,
  ESC : (set-frame-font "Aurulent Sans Mono")
surely works.

Please try this:

(gdb) br ftfont_list
(gdb) run -fn 'Aurulent Sans Mono'
and Each time Emacs stops at ftfont_list,
(gdb) pp spec
(gdb) fin
(gdb) pr
