If I just hold down `f'
on this function eventually the slowdown occurs, but I cannot see
where within it. If I tried stepping through it, I'd probably be at
it all night.
How about typing C-z during the slow part? Then make a backtrace
and you'll see what it's doing. If you try that a few times
you should see a pattern.
