The change to deal with multibyte strings differently feels risky to
me. It is a clever idea, and might offer a way out of the dilemma.
But we should try it when we have more time to fix whatever it might
break.
So I'd rather not have it in the 22.1 release.
Would you please take it out of there, for now?
