What is the purpose of making grep.txt set buffer-read-only?
It is a very strange thing to do.

etc/grep.txt itself says:
* Introduction -*-grep-*-
...
Please do not edit this file in grep-mode, it may lose escape
sequences on saving. Visit this file literally for editing.
