I wrote both of them, but neither of them is satisfactory, really. Could you write clearer documentation for them? Providing a hook where the font lock pattern writer can extended the region to refontify is imho a very straightforward way to give control over that aspect. I don't contend that the text properties probably are more suitable in many cases, though. I think we should add that hook now. It is simple and easy to understand. Even if in some cases it is not a good solution, it is a good solution part of the time.
