I think we should make the whole _concept_ of "unibyte" deprecated...
That would be too drastic--and unnecessary.
There are probably thousands of users who use it,
if not tens of thousands. This isn't broken;
it works smoothly enough now, and no longer requires
a lot of maintenance.
So let's please not think of changing it.
