Just in case (not guaranteed to work). Did you try:
make maintainer-clean
./configure
make bootstrap
make maintainer-clean could be the important step.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it did not work for me. If you think
a diff comparing the way the two build attempts failed would be
helpful, let me know & I can send that.
Any other suggestions? I recently built the Fink version (CVS as of
June 17), with options as follows, and that worked. After I send
this, I'm going to give it a shot from the CVS directory with the
same options & see if that works. I'll make maintainer-clean
first...
