Trademark law has nothing to do with symbol names used inside a program. You can talk about "Microsoft Windows" however you like in a book; you don't need permission. Therefore my preference is to use the compiler-defined macros (defined _WIN32 || defined __WIN32__), for which one cannot be sued, In hacker terminology, calling something a "win" is a form of praise. If you wish to praise Microsoft Windows, you're free to do so; but if you don't, then you might want to think twice about using the term "win32". In any case, don't use it in GNU software.
