I'm about to push a new byte-compiler warning that finds mistakes like
(eq x '(ho hum))
Ie, attempts to compare, by identity, literals that may not match anything at all: quoted lists, strings, floats etc.
The warning finds about 20 such mistakes in the Emacs tree, including two by this programmer. So far no false positives have turned up, although not all warnings indicate actual bugs (many things just happen to work by luck). Typically the remedy is to use equal instead of eq, and so on.
The warning applies to arguments in calls to eq, eql, memq, memql, assq, rassq, remq and delq.
Given its usefulness and low risk (it does not actually change the behaviour of anything) I suggest it be added to the emacs-29 branch. Objections? (Clearly we'd like to fix the mistakes found in emacs-29, and doing so is a lot more convenient if the warning is actually there too.)
Patch below for reference. I don't think it merits a NEWS entry but could certainly add one.

The warning currently applies to eq, eql, memq, memql, assq, rassq,

No, please don't. We have already too many last-minute new features
in Emacs 29.

The warning could perhaps remind users of `equal'.
It's likely that in at least some cases what they
really meant was (equal x '(ho hum)). And `equal'
takes care of all types (strings etc.).

Is this guaranteed or just an implementation detail?
If it is not guaranteed, then "may never match" sounds correct.
I miss a suggestion, though: the warning as it is is not actionable. It
would be great if it could say something along the lines of
"... (arg 2). Consider using `equal'."

That depends on how you interpret it. IIRC, that all "" are the same object
was done to avoid having tons of "" in pure space. So in that sense, is
guaranteed. And, as such, the warning is superfluous in this specific case.
Anyway, as documented, that identical constant strings are different
objects is, in general, an implementation detail, and the same goes for
floats:

That's only an implementation aspect that we give no guarantees about on the Lisp language level, and in fact as you correctly observe:

Precisely, and often there's no telling which one we compare against in (eq x "") -- that expression may return t or nil when x is an empty string.
Thus it's definitely a well-motivated warning, toy examples like

notwithstanding. We simply do not guarantee the identity of literal strings and the empty string is no exception.

While this sounds like a useful suggestion on the surface, it's actually slightly dangerous: blindly replacing `eq` with `equal` (and `memq` with `member`, and so on) may very well break working code (that silently relied on the condition not being true). It's also a poor remedy against pratfalls like

which do occur. What we really want is to make a human look at the code, and think.

Dunno what the "... (arg 2)" is about, but the

No one (at least not I) suggested such a thing.
Neither my "remind" suggestion nor the quoted (?)
"consider" suggestion imply or even suggest
anything like "blindly replacing".
The point (my point at least) was that some users
might mistakenly use `eq' when they really meant
(should have meant) `equal', and a reminder about
the difference might help then.
On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of _warnings_

Precisely. And when doing so, at least be aware
that `equal' exists and how it's different from
`eq'. To some users (esp. new users) that may
not be obvious or front-of-mind.
