If any of you have an earlier version of gcc still installed after
installing gcc-3.3 (I kept 2.95.3 around), I suggest that you try to
debug the core dump problem by successively recompiling one file at a
time with the older gcc.  This can be automated with a modest script,
and I've found it a useful technique in the past to deal with compiler
errors in large programs.
