OK, I tried that too:
(setq message-send-mail-function 'mailclient-send-it)

Same thing:

shell-command-to-string: Searching for program: no such file or directory,
/bin/bash

This is nothing like what it used to do, sadly. Just try Emacs 22.[123] or 23.1
on Windows, `emacs -Q', no changes. Works fine.
