Some people use the buttons in reverse order or otherwise don’t have mice that conform to the standard that wording would expect. I don’t think it takes too much cognitive overhead to map 1/2/3 to left/right/middle for users of those kinds of mice.

Why emacs calls these mouse-1, 2 and 3? Wouldn't it be more user friendly to say
