I'm using DejaVu Sans, where all the digits have the same width, but still with column-number-mode enabled, the mode-line exhibits jumpiness when the length of the column number changes. But maybe using monospaced fonts only on these parts of the mode-line will fix the problem when the rest of the mode-line will use variable-pitch?
