In this case, you might observe the D-Bus system bus via

  "dbus-monitor --system"

and play with your network. In case you have a wireless connection, you
will see already the signals about the strength of the connection.

From my understanding, it is the best approach, at least if you intend
to watch for signals. As usual, I'm at your service :-)
