There have been many bugs fixed in `emacs-24' but things have settled
there it seems, so we (my secret agents and I) think it's a good time to
start preparing for a 24.5 release.

So we're looking for a kind soul who'd like to help with this, i.e. take
on the job of making the pretest tarballs (actually this 24.5 release
should have a very short pretest, so the "s" in "tarballs" should not
be needed), uploading them, making announcements, keeping track of
bug reports related to that branch and deciding which ones need to be
fixed before the release, those kinds of things (Glenn can tell you
more about it).

This is a great opportunity for someone to get more involved in Emacs's
development. And as usual, that person can count on all of us to
provide all the whining and screaming he/she might need.

        Stefan

I think it could be fun to help with this, and even if I don't know much
about the Emacs release process, I'm willing to learn, so I volunteer :)

Thank you. Please start by reading admin/make-tarball.txt, which
describes what needs to be done.

I have errors with M-x authors. Some files referenced in changelogs seem
to be missing. Should I add all of the missing files to `authors-ignored-files' or
should I try to track renamed files from commits and add them to
`authors-renamed-files-alist'?

The missing files are:

.bzrignore
info/dir
notes/changelogs
admin/notes/bugtracker
admin/notes/tags
notes/bzr
notes/BRANCH
gnus-coding.txt
emulation/ws-mode.el

Cheers,
Nico

I figured out that some of these files were renamed, and added them to
`authors-renamed-files-alist'. Some others were just issues in
changelog entries that I simply fixed.

Now I still have an issue with the following 3 files, and I'm not sure
if they should just be ignored:

info/dir
notes/changelogs
gnus-coding.txt

Also, should I add a changelog entry when fixing the changelog itself?

Ignore it, it's automatically generated these days.

This was merged to notes/repo, so I guess treat it as renamed.

I have no idea what that is. Maybe someone else does.

No.

Thanks.

Thank you.

I completed all the steps in admin/make-tarball.txt except for
uploading, and committed the changes to the emacs-24 branch.

I haven't uploaded the tarball yet as I'm waiting for an answer from the
ftp admins. Also, since it's the first time I'm doing this, would
someone like to double check it?

Cheers,
Nico

The tarball maybe? I could upload it somewhere, as it's too big for an
email.

You can ping them again after a few days if they don't answer.

It's not the end of the world if there's a problem in the tarball
(since it's just a pretest anyway). So if it works for you (i.e. you
can untar it and successfully "make" in it), I think it's probably OK,
but if you have reasons to worry, then feel free to upload it to some
web-site and post a pointer to it here.

Thanks.

Ok, it does untar and build. I don't have any specific reason to worry,
so I'll just upload it as soon as I get access to it.

Cool. Now I'm just waiting for upload access rights on the ftp
server. If that takes too much time, maybe someone else could sign the
tarball and upload it?
