I'm using Emacs 24.5 GUI version on debian jessie with the xfce desktop.
The fuction browse-url-can-use-xdg-open return nil.
# xprop -root _DT_SAVE_MODE
_DT_SAVE_MODE: not found.
> (getenv "DESKTOP_SESSION")
"xfce"
