Yes, they do. When the Debian emacs pacakges move from a 27.x version to a 28.x version, upgrading will just move you to 28. You can't have more than one version of emacs installed via the packages right now. (You could in the past (we had emacs25-nox, etc.), but we "unversioned" them for now because, in part, upstream backward compatbility with respect to anything "substantial" has been excellent for a long time.) > And the same with a user who wants both emacs-nox, emacs-pgtk, and > emacs-lucid (say) installed on the same system. Right? That's not allowed (and that in particular never has been in Debian and (I assume) derivatives). e.g. installing emacs-nox will automatically force out/replace emacs-lucid if the former was installed, and then all of the .elcs (and .elns if we go that direction) will be automatically regenerated during the switch. -- Rob Browning rlb @defaultvalue.org and @debian.org GPG as of 2011-07-10 E6A9 DA3C C9FD 1FF8 C676 D2C4 C0F0 39E9 ED1B 597A GPG as of 2002-11-03 14DD 432F AE39 534D B592 F9A0 25C8 D377 8C7E 73A4
