BTW, all these copies appear out of nothing: the variable watcher saw very few timers, and then suddenly that many the next time the WATCH-FUNCTION was called. If they would have been added explicitly from Lisp, I would see intermediate steps AFAIU. I collected a backtrace from the moment of time when the variable watcher fired (via WATCH-FUNCTION).
