I generally don't like autoloading variables, so I'd like to hear
reasons in favor of it as well.

Because when people ask "how do I make buffer names look like ...", I
want to say "Customize the variable uniquify-buffer-name-style" -- but
that doesn't work unless they do (require 'uniquify) first...

I see.  Actually, now that I think about it, I'd be tempted to make the
smarter unification the default (i.e. preload uniquify.el).
