Now imagine the *minimap* window on the left of the window to which is associates (say blah.el) but with the modeline of blah.el extending under both, and scrollbars also to the left of *minimap*. Editing commands in blah.el would still behave as now. That minimap.el exists and works shows that elisp is fast enough for the task of maintaining the contents.
