The interface you describe in your reply to David sounds reasonable.

I suppose maybe some extra bindings in the "*vc-log*" buffer too would
be useful (since that's mainly where I would want to check the state of
what I'm commiting)... [e.g., maybe special versions of the + and -
commands that prompt for buffer names instead of operating on the
current buffer.]
