Can anyone explain why the Buffers menu contains the entries "Next
Buffer" and "Previous Buffer"?  Surely they're useless, since all the
buffers are listed in the menu.

I don't use the buffers menu, but for Emacs, menus are often as (or
more!)  useful as documentation than as for actual command-entry...

They are not necessarily all shown; see the various related
defcustom's in menu-bar.el.
