That must be it. I don't have a backup of ~/.bazaar/bazaar.conf on that system, and I ran bzr whoami ... to set it before looking at what was there. So I can only assume that while developing that test for vc-dwim (which runs "bzr whoami 'U. Ser '"), I inadvertently ran it once without first making HOME point to a temporary directory. Thanks!
