I don't know if it's related to a recent change in Emacs, or due to the
fact that Debian unstable now has GTK+ version 2.6.9 but I'm seeing
something odd with GTK menus: they seem to disappear every time a timer
expires. For example, if I call M-x display-splash-screen, then open a
menu and keep it open (by not clicking on anything), the menu disappears
when the help items change in the buffer.

The same happens if I keep the pointer above a menu entry and wait for
the tooltip to appear and then go away: when the tooltip disappears, so
does the menu.

The menu bar looks like this when a menu has disappeared:

Notice the small rectangle under the lower left corner, it looks like a
GTK menu without any items in it.

This is with a CVS version from a few hours ago.

I can see this with GTK 2.6.9 but not 2.6.2, so something happened in
between those versions. I'll try to fix this.

I have now been able to try on another machine running GTK+ version
2.6.8 and the problem doesn't occur. So it seems quite specific to
2.6.9.

Well, something in 2.6.9 changed that triggered this bug. But the
bug was a stupid typo in the Emacs code, my fault I'm afraid.
Anyway, it is fixed now.
