OK, this I can reproduce.
With Richard's changes, the auxilliary buffer containing the mbox data
is auto-saved, but this buffer does *not* contain the text that's being
edited in the RMAIL buffer. So nothing's gained in this case.
To fix this case, the annotation functions might detect that rmail-edit
is in effect, and DTRT so that only the presently edited message is
auto-saved.
But it seems that Richard's concern is with rmail-output, not
rmail-edit.
