So something like this:

(defconst emacs-build-system
          (if (file-exists-p "~/.emacs-build-system-name")
              (with-temp-buffer
                (insert-file-contents "~/.emacs-build-system-name")
                (buffer-string))
             (system-name)))
              

would be okay? The defconst is set at byte-compilation time right?
That's why

(defconst emacs-build-system (system-name)
  "Name of the system on which Emacs was built, or nil if not available.")

Returns the build-system rather than the current?
