Look: Both (kbd "DEL") and "\C-?" display as "^?" (if it pass our mail softwares: ""), and contain only ?\C-? (127), which is usually backspace (or is it sometimes different, as (kbd "") returns [backspace], which seems different?). I believe this is an historic oddity of old terminal and/or keyboard, related to how they implemented stuff.
