That gcc-8 turned out to be easy to get ready, and it shows the same problem (and solution). So now I have an alpha branch of emacs being allegedly miscompiled by a non-released tip-of-tree version of gcc, in a feature that messes around with the guts of Emacs' object representations. I find it hard to assign blame here. Should I start using unreleased binutils next? :-) Robert
