Alan, I am very much looking forward to your critique of my proposal, but up to now I'm having a hard time to relate what you say with what's actually done. May I suggest you to try it out? The standalone package version is very easy to test, just load the .el file and activate `isearch-mb-mode': https://github.com/astoff/isearch-mb/
