I think split-sideways (or split-side-to-side) and split-top-to-bottom may be good aliases to the originals. Still: Does the splitting `line' get drawn from side-to-side? or the does the split result in two new windows side-by-each? Does the splitting `line' get drawn from top-to-bottom ... Will there always be an aporia---gap between the denomination and the materiality of this mechanism?
