So you have to use the mouse? That's a pretty severe limitation and would make that (as a general design) pretty useless. But we could have it as an option, I guess. So if we have a fold-text.el library, it could offer * fringes * buttons * svg * emojis * other random text * "..." or a combination of these, and then have some kind of fall-back system (i.e., if you want fringes but they aren't switched on, then fall-back to button), or something (that the user can specify).
