Yes, see `auto-mode-alist':

     ("\\.json\\'" . js-mode)

Ok, thanks. (I can't use Emacs 24 until I have moved a lot of things
there. And I do not have time so maybe I stay 23 as long as I use
Emacs ... ;-)

...but not necessarily vice-versa [1].  Perhaps there should be a strict 
json-mode.  Currently you can open a .json file and emacs trunk, using 
javascript-mode, is okay with it having {a: 'b'}, say, when it should 
really be highlighting that as a json syntax error (unquoted key, single 
quoted value).
