For this to work, one has to add

   HTTPTunnelPort localhost:8118

and it only appears to work for https:// URLs, not unencrypted http://.

You can use https://check.torproject.org/ to check, if the request goes
through the Tor proxy, the page will say "Congratulations. This browser
is configured to use Tor."
