The Emacs > version number is there I'm trying to make progress on this. If we bump the version of the generated elc files from 23 to 24, we can check for that. I pushed a commit to scratch/record which does this. I'm not at all sure if this is the right way to do it. It does seem to work as intended, and not break anything else.
