Right, I've never used it myself. I just do "cp -a".
How about this, then (also untested):
git clone emacs emacs-24
cd emacs-24
git remote set-url origin git://git.savannah.gnu.org/emacs.git
git checkout emacs-24
(personally I'll stay with the "cp -a"...)
