Emacs pretest 23.1.96 is now available for download via FTP, at the
following location:

  ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/emacs-23.1.96.tar.gz

The xdelta against the Emacs 23.1.95 pretest is here:

  ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/emacs-23.1.95-23.1.96.xdelta

This is the seventh pretest for what will be the Emacs 23.2 release.

Pretesters: please send me an email reporting success or failure on your
build platform. Report bugs via M-x report-emacs-bugs, or email
emacs-pretest-bug@gnu.org. For questions, email emacs-devel@gnu.org.

Developers: we're now very close to the 23.2 release, and the next
pretest is likely to be the release candidate. From now until release,
in order to get as much testing as possible, I encourage everyone to use
this pretest (or the emacs-23 bzr branch), rather than the trunk,
whenever possible. If you come across any problems that you think
should be considered a release blocker, please email me (and if said
problems are in the bug tracker, please help make sure they are marked
as "Serious").

Thanks.

It builds and runs OK on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Built with gcc
(TDM-2 mingw32) 4.4.1-dw2

Stephen Leake, maintainer of Ada mode, just filed #5983 (23.1.96;
compilation-next-error broken) and told me in his opinion this is a
release blocker.

Are etc/*.pyc files supposed to be distributed? There are no rules to
create or update them.

Hmm, good catch. I'm not sure how they ended up in there. The next
tarball won't contain them.

Two lines of lib-src/makefile.w32-in contain curly brackets which are
not allowed by NMAKE (MSVC 2003).
I can successfully compile on Windows XP Home after applying the
enclosed patch.

Note that this bug has been present since the emacs-23.1.91 pretest
(I've been mostly running Ubuntu on this machine lately.) This leads
me to believe there's not much interest in compiling with Microsoft's
seven year old compiler. It's rather awkward to make this work since
the user needs to download a new version of rc.exe to build the emacs
icon. It seems to me there's no real advantage in continuing to
support MSVC.
Nevertheless, I will continue to (occasionally) report any obvious
bugs as I find them.

I reported this a while ago and Juanma fixed it, but apparently the
change was only applied to the trunk.

Builds and runs fine on FreeBSD 8.0:

FreeBSD chateau.d.if 8.0-RELEASE-p2 FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE-p2 #3: Tue Mar 2 01:06:00 IST 2010 root@chateau.d.if:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/CHATEAU amd64

Anyone interested in trying out on FreeBSD can try out the patch for the
updated editors/emacs-devel port in the PR ports/143130[1].
