IMO, definitely. Quite a few Emacs features make a string from buffer
text and then put the string back. So if we don't support large
strings, we have bugs waiting to happen.

If you mean the %d vs %ld etc., then I don't think it's a frequent
problem in Emacs sources.

It shouldn't, the registers are 64-bit.
