FWIW, I very much doubt that many people nowadays would share Drew's issue with using Git. Using Git is a no-brainer nowadays. I actually think this is a very unique situation, and anyone else who insists on using MELPA doesn't do that for such simple technical reasons. I think the legal paperwork is the main issue, and also perhaps not everyone would like to be accountable for their code practices before the Emacs maintainers and their peculiar requirements and expectations.
