If that's our solution, then this should be prominently mentioned in
the README file.  (As one of "these sort of users", I use installers
in many cases, and would not expect myself to be considered "special".
But since you are doing the work, it's your call.  I obviously have no
problems with unzipping a zip archive as the method of installing a
package.)

Anyway, in general, I see no reason why we couldn't cater to both
groups, since updating PATH is not hard, and many/most installers
offer that, at least as an option.
