I suggest to rephrase:

 This variable holds a list of functions that Emacs calls as part of
 doing redisplay.

This (a) avoids passive tense, (b) does not use "redisplay" twice in 2
different senses, and (3) is more accurate, because "just before doing
redisplay" is factually incorrect.
