Like 25k line files? First, I meant the time taken by line-number-display-width, something you shouldn't be bothered unless you write Lisp which calls that function. And no, the performance doesn't seem to depend on the size of the buffer, at least not for medium-size buffers (I tried a 33K-line buffer).
