This is how far I got: http://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/vlf.el However, I have seldom had a real need so I cannot really say if it is useful or not. What I do know is that it hits the roof when the file is larger than that integer limit in Emacs, whatever it is. And Richard's UI suggestion could be used together with this I guess.
