Bingo!  At least it seems you're right.
I tried `C-h v password-word-equivalents', without visiting
simple.el, and I suffered an even worse delay (_many_ minutes).

How did you know?

As I said, I go to simple.el quite often, to see some code.
And I doubt that I will ever need to go there to see code
that involves non-ASCII chars.

For me, at least, splitting the file into SIMPLE simple and
FANCY "simple", would be great.  (Yes, I know that one person's
fancy is another person's simple.)
