Maclisp (which predates C) also represented characters as fix= nums: Maclisp #/x was equivalent to Emacs Lisp ?x. So the heritage runs through Cambridge, not through Murray Hill. Disclaimer: I never used Maclisp (I jumped straight from Lisp 1.5 to Emac= s Lisp and Scheme) and of course Richard is the authority here.
