I need an optimized build for coding and non-optimized one for
debugging. How else could I reconcile these?

I usually bootstrap once every year after the traditional copyright
changes. Till then there were no build problems. I believe that I've
seen first problems around the beginning of February but didn't pay much
attention initially. Things got very annoying in the past seven or ten
days and particularly on Windows: After yesterday's continuous failures
on Windows, pulling an even larger changeset on GNU/Linux today had all
builds proceed without complications.
