Is there anything special that has to be done to build emacs newer than
24.5 from git? I get missing file errors (master HEAD says it's missing
test/automated/Makefile.in; whereas emacs-25 HEAD says it's missing
src/lisp.mk)

You're supposed to run autogen.sh first.
src/lisp.mk is now built rather than in the repository. The test files got moved
in master.

Thanks - in emacs-24 this was apparently taken care of by running "make"
[which also ran configure, at which point I interrupted and ran
configure with my own options] - was this a change, or simply an
accident that it worked at all before?
