I looked into this and it turns out that it can be addressed, on the platforms that support "gcc -g3". -g3 is not the default, which means random Emacs builds are unlikely to work with GDB and macros. Still, gcc -g3 works on my main platform, which removes much of that issue with macros. Macros' main problems are their gotchas with side effects and scoping, alas, which gcc -g3 doesn't fix.
