Adding:

[ -f $HOME/.Xdefaults ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xdefaults

to ~/.bashrc, with .Xdefaults given by

====================================
! ---------[ emacs ] ---------
Emacs.FontBackend:      xft
Emacs.font:             Monospace 12
Emacs.geometry:         -0+0

! ---------[ xft ] ---------
Xft*antialias:          true
Xft*autohint:           true

====================================

solves the problems!

Cheers,
AAngelo.
